UCSD Makerspace Kiosk
The UCSD Makerspace is a hub of creativity, welcoming students from all departments and skill levels with workshops that are inclusive and accessible to everyone. My team and I collaborated to design a user-friendly kiosk protoype for the Makerspace. We focused on the sign-in process, ensuring that users have a seamless and enjoyable experience right from the start.
Problem
Sign in process is so complicated..
and it takes wayy too much time :(
The current sign-in process at the UCSD Makerspace is outdated and inefficient. It relies on a single computer at the entrance, where students are required to sign in before entering. This often results in long lines and unnecessary wasted time.
Goal
Faster and Better!
Our goal is to develop a prototype with features that make the sign-in process more efficient. College students are incredibly busy, and we want to help them skip the long lines and get to their destinations quickly!
Feild Work and Insights
The results of our feild work research showed that 63.9% took over a minute to sign in, 30.6% ignored the kiosk, and 5.8% needed to sign waivers. These findings point to inefficiencies and confusion in the current system, indicating a need for improvements.
Interviews and Insights
We conducted interviews with staff members and students to gain insights into their experiences while navigating the Makerspace. The feedback received from these individuals provided valuable qualitative data about the specific challenges users encounter. This information will guide us in determining the appropriate approaches to address these issues effectively.

Prototype
The redesigned prototype addresses feedback gathered from user interviews by enhancing the sign-in experience. It features a more intuitive interface on the kiosk that guides students through the process: returning users are promptly directed to sign in, while new users are navigated towards waiver signing. Additionally, clear instructions are displayed for both processes, ensuring ease of use. To further assist students, the option to seek help from staff members is prominently incorporated, ensuring a seamless and user-friendly experience..
3D Prototype
This 3D prototype offers an immersive visualization of the kiosk design, showcasing it in UCSD colors. The creative shape of the design reflects its purpose for the design lab, providing a unique and engaging representation.
